In 1939 the Second World War broke out across Europe, and ordinary people with their ordinary lives suddenly found themselves catapulted into extraordinary circumstances. In 1944, Kitty Woodall a local do-gooder from North London has decided to take over the running of a local Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) group. After placing an advert in the local post-office asking for female volunteers, Kitty hopes that many women will arrrive to help. However, when four local misfits turn up at her door Kitty panics that she has made a big mistake.
